Autumn catalogue plant list

This is a list of the spring flowering bulbs that we have for autumn planting. They will be priced and available to order online from June, when we publish our autumn catalogue.  Please send an email to reserve any of these bulbs.

We also have a list of Autumn flowering bulbs which are dispatched separately between August and September.

Please click on the hyperlink to see a picture which will open in a new window. The pictures are, on average, 80k each which will take 18 seconds to download on a 56.6k modem. If there is no hyperlink then we do not have a picture at present.

Please note that not all plants listed will be in the current catalogue. If you cannot find the plant that you are looking for in our current list please contact us for more information.

ARISARUM (Mouse Plant)
These unusual plants always excite comment. They should be planted 6" deep in damp peaty soil in a semi-shady position.
ARISARUM PROBOSCIDEUM

CAMASSIA LEICHTLINII SEMI-PLENA
CAMASSIA QUAMASH (esculenta).

CHIONODOXA (glory of the snow_
Called Glory of the Snow because they flower when the snow melts in the mountains of Turkey. They grow well in a sunny position with good drainage. Unfortunately the botanists have been at it again; the names are now very confusing. The old name is in brackets.
CHIONODOXA FORBESII (luciliae)
CHIONODOXA FORBESII PINK GIANT
CHIONODOXA LUCILIAE (gigantea)
CHIONODOXA SARDENSIS

CORYDALIS
Tiny snapdragon flowers on short stems with fern-like foliage. Excellent for naturalising in cool conditions under shrubs.
CORYDALIS SOLIDA
CORYDALIS SOLIDA RED SHADES
CORYDALIS GEORGE BAKER

CROCUS (spring flowering)
We have a large number of Crocus varieties on our list and this is necessary due to the wide variations of colour. They should all be planted 3" deep in full sun for the best effect. If mice are a problem, place 1/4" wire netting half an inch below the surface of the soil. Crocus make excellent indoor pot plants, but only if they are grown outside and brought in when the flower bud shows colour.

CHRYSANTHUS CROCUS
These charming small-flowering varieties are very distinct in that they all have at least two colours and spread freely.

DICHELOSTEMMA IDA MAIA (Californian Firecracker)
DICHELOSTEMMA PINK DIAMOND

ERANTHIS (Winter Aconite)
These late winter-flowering plants are always extremely popular. They are traditionally sold in the autumn as dry bulbs but, since these can be difficult to start into growth, we also offer them as growing plants in the spring — see Spring List.
ERANTHIS CILICICA
ERANTHIS HYEMALIS

ERYTHRONIUM
A very lovely and graceful plant which grows well in a damp position in semi-shade. The bulbs should not dry out before planting. We lift the bulbs daily for despatch.

ERYTHRONIUM TUOLUMNENSE
ERYTHRONIUM TUOLUMNENSE PAGODA
ERYTHRONIUM WHITE BEAUTY

FRITILLARIA
A fascinating group with bell-like flowers which like good drainage. However, the meleagris forms need a damp position or semi-shade. Although not dwarf bulbs we include two forms of F. imperialis which like sunny places in a rich soil and are best planted 6" deep on their sides.
FRIT ACMOPETALA
FRIT CAMSCHATCENSIS (black Sarana lily)

These are not to be confused with the large-flowered Gladiolus. They flower much earlier, are smaller, more elegant and do not require staking. They are hardy in the south of England and like to be planted in full sun in a good garden soil. There are two planting times — autumn and spring. The varieties listed below should be planted as soon as they are received in Oct./Nov. If you are doubtful about your climate, pot them up and transfer them into the open ground at the end of March.
GLADIOLUS BYZANTINUS
GLADIOLUS COLVILLEI ALBUS THE BRIDE
GLADIOLUS NANUS PRINCE CLAUS.

TULIPS
There is no doubt that the large flowered tulips will give a fabulous display the first year — the problem is to keep them going. If they are planted at least 6" deep in sun in a good, well-drained soil this can be achieved, especially with heavy dressings of lime. If this is not possible, the bulbs should be lifted and dried off in a warm shed immediately the leaves have died down. Whatever you do, do not plant the bulbs until October at the earliest.

The smaller, graceful species tulips are often very long lived and should not be lifted at all. Plant 6" deep in full sun,
